چکیده

We treat the problem of scheduling a owshop with pallet requirements. Each job in the owshop needs a pallet the entire time, from the start of its rst operation until the completion of the last operation, and the number of pallets in the shop at any given time is limited by an integer K. We prove that the problem is NP-hard in the strong sense for m 2 and K 3, and for m 3 and K 2, where m is the number of machines. We focus on the impact of the number of pallets on makespan. While it is an NP-hard problem to nd the minimum number of pallets subject to an upper bound on makespan, we prove a worst-case bound on the minimum K that guarantees the least possible makespan in a two-machine owshop. We propose several heuristic algorithms to solve the scheduling problem, and using simulation we study the impact of K and the performance of the proposed algorithms. We nd that the Gilmore-Gomory algorithm performs very well in a two-machine owshop if K 4, and the well-known Nawaz-Enscore-Ham sequencing heuristic is superior to other proposed methods in general. We further conclude that an appropriate number for K is between 1:5m and 2m in the sense that the marginal reduction in makespan is negligible when K increases beyond 2m.

Lotstreaming with Equal Sublots in No-wait Flowshops

We consider the problem of minimizing makespan in a no-wait flow-shop with an arbitrary number of machines. We assume that all sublots have the same number of items. We consider the cases with or without loading times. In both cases we show the existence of a critical machine which never remains idle. Then we get a set of general conditions on the processing times and loading times, which bind ...

A review of exact solution methods for the non-preemptive multiprocessor flowshop problem

The hybrid or flexible flowshop problem is a generalization of the flowshop in such a way that every job can be processed by one among several machines on each machine stage. In recent years a number of effective exact methods have been developed. A major reason for this progress is the development of new job and machine based lower bounds as well as the rapidly increasing importance of constra...

A Probabilistic Analysis of 2-Machine Flowshops

We study a 2-machine flowshop in which all processing times are independently and identically distributed, with values known to the scheduler. We are able to describe in detail the expected behavior of the flowshop under optimal and under heuristic schedules. Our results suggest that minimizing makespan might be a superfluous objective: Scheduling the jobs randomly requires less information and...

Minimizing makespan in hybrid flowshops

We consider flowshop environments that consist of multiple stages and multiple machines in each stage. The flowshops are flexible in the sense that a task within a stage can be processed by any of the machines in the stage. We refer to this design as the hybrid flowshop. Our objective is to schedule a set of n jobs so as to minimize makespan. The problem is NP-complete even in the case of a sin...

Minimizing Makespan in Flowshops with Bounded Processing Times

CT : The two-machine flowshop scheduling problem of minimizing makespan is addressed where jobs have rocessing times which are bounded within certain intervals. The probability distributions of job processing hin intervals are not known. The only known information about job processing times is the lower and upper he decision about a solution of the problem, i.e., finding a sequence, has to be m...
